Wireless Safety Alert System

Our team was approached by a Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) doctor with a crucial requirement to improve the safety system of the unit. The primary objective was to reduce the high mortality rate associated with NICU admissions. One significant reason for such deaths was the failure of medical professionals to use sanitizers before touching babies. To address this issue, the doctor wanted us to develop a safety alarm system that would remind nurses in the unit to use sanitizers before handling the infants.

Project Summary

An industrial IoT safety alert system to remind the medical professionals to use sanitizer before touching babies to reduce the high mortality rate associated with NICU admissions.

Challenge

Product Vision

The doctor wanted us to develop a safety alarm system that would remind nurses in the unit to use sanitizers before handling the infants. In addition doctors needed to implement the safety alarm for the main door too.

Final Outcome

An industrial IoT safety alert system to remind the medical professionals to use sanitizer before touching babies to reduce the high mortality rate associated with NICU admissions.

We needed accurate measurements to create the equipment. We used vernier measuring equipment to take rough measurements, drew rough sketches on paper, cut and placed them over the incubator to validate the measurements. We identified and implemented a locking mechanism using holding arms to fix the equipment to the incubator. We chose suitable components, such as surface-mounted device (SMD) switches, to trigger the mechanism considering the space available. We used IoT communication techniques that sometimes caused delays due to network traffic. To mitigate this issue, we divided the system into two. One system communicates offline, linking all the locks with sanitizers to real-time activation, while the other logs data and communicates with the mobile app with minimal delay.

Safety Alarm Sanitiser for the Main Door

In addition to the units that we fixed for the incubators, doctors needed to implement the safety alarm for the main door, so that each and everyone who attends to the NICU needs to Sanitize before entering the NICU unit RFID locking mechanism was already in place, but still managed to get the safety alarm system to work accordingly with the already placed RFID system.
